While trying to balance all of my own mental and chronic illness, I also have a 13 year old boy with issues of his own. My son has High Functioning Autism, Bi-Polar, ADHD and Anxiety. So yes, I am parenting mental illness issues that are only growing with his age. Am I going to post about it? Yes I am. He told me I could, because he wants people to understand.
ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) affects 1 in 59 kids. That means, in a public school, there is most likely a child with autism in half of the classrooms. Half. That also means that there are a lot of people, like my husband and I, that are parenting autism on a daily basis. I do believe that there is more Autism Awareness than ever and I think what we truly need to strive for now, is Autism Understanding.
Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that usually begins in the late teenage years or early adulthood. Yes, my son was diagnosed with Bipolar early and yes, it is rare but it does happen. It is a long-lasting condition that causes drastic changes in a person’s mood and energy levels. This radical change is usually between two states called manic and depressive.
